Clean Up and Declutter
Start with something basic: clean up and declutter your home. If you have stuff scattered everywhere and allow surfaces to accumulate dust, this will only compound existing stresses. Take a Saturday, and focus on making your home a tidy, organized living space. Scrub floors, walls, kitchens, and bathroom surfaces. Pick up your possessions, and place them in boxes, baskets, or storage tubs. Attach labels so that you can find things easily. This will take some effort, but you'll be much more organized and comfortable when you're done.
Plan Meals
You can also increase your organization if you plan your family's meals ahead of time. Designate a meal-planning day, and work out a menu for the next week. Make a grocery list at the same time, and include everything you need for the week. This can help curb impulse purchases and save you money.
Assign Chores
If your kids are old enough, they can certainly lend a hand around the house. Create some chore charts, and assign tasks according to your kids' ages and skills. They could clean their rooms, help with meal planning and cooking, take out the trash, and even do some laundry. Be sure to show your kids exactly what you expect for each chore, and introduce a reward system to keep them motivated.
Get Your Paperwork in Order
While your kids can help you with many chores, you should be the one to get your paperwork in order. Develop a filing system for your documents, and label each folder clearly. Alternately, you might choose to scan your paper documents and save them in a computerized filing system, especially if you're short on space. Back up your files on a USB thumb drive, an external hard drive, or both for extra security.
Work Effectively From Home
If you work from home, this can add to your potential for organizational chaos, and you'll have to make an even greater effort to stay organized. For one thing, set up a dedicated workspace in your home, and don't let other activities intrude upon it. Strive to keep it orderly and calm. Also, work to smooth out your work routines. If you send invoices by mail, for instance, consider switching to electronic invoices to avoid an accumulation of paper. Look into customized invoices. You can use a convenient online invoice generator that provides you with free templates and allows you to customize them with your text, logo, and more. You can then download invoices in a suitable format and send them to your customers so that you can get paid on time.
Get Organized
Your life doesn't have to be chaos. Get organized by cleaning and decluttering, planning meals, assigning chores to your kids, putting your paperwork in order, and working effectively from home with tools such as electronic invoicing. Check out the White Loft website for products to help you get organized.

]]>Are you selling your home and feeling overwhelmed by all the work involved in keeping it clean and staged for showings? Maintaining a show-ready home isn’t easy for anyone, and it’s especially difficult for families with young kids and working parents. No matter how busy your schedule or how good your kids are at undoing your hard work, a spotless, staged home is critical for your home sale. That’s why White Loft offers home-selling advice that will help you meet buyers’ expectations without sending your own stress levels sky-high.
Decluttering and Redecorating Children’s Spaces
Clean, neutral spaces let buyers imagine their own furniture and family living in your house. But if children’s bedrooms and playrooms are decorated with bright colors and cartoon characters, buyers will have trouble looking past the décor to see the great space underneath. Removing items from a child’s bedroom can be difficult for them. If you are moving while your house is still on the market, consider leaving a few key items or renting furniture for staging while moving the key items to your child’s new room. Or if you need a temporary home while selling, you can rent a two bedroom home in the Austin area starting at around $2,700. Then your child can have their usual setup and you won’t have to worry about surprise showings.
It’s important to redecorate children’s rooms so buyers without young kids can picture the space as a home office, guest room, or something else. Repaint to a neutral color, replace busy bedding with solid colors, and swap posters and wall decals with simple, framed prints.
Kids’ bedrooms tend to be smaller, but you can maximize space by using hidden storage for toys, such as under-bed drawers or a cubby system in the closet. Simple storage also makes it easier for kids to keep their rooms clean while your house is on the market. Rather than trying to cram every toy into limited space, carefully approach organizing their space with a purpose, and downsize toy collections, and donate or throw away toys that are broken, missing pieces, or no longer loved.
Keeping Up with Cleaning
Hiring a cleaning service is by far the best way to keep your house clean while it’s on the market. A weekly or bi-weekly cleaning service will handle all the sweeping, mopping, dusting, and sanitizing, so all you have to worry about is tidying up before showings. It’s hard to beat that convenience for working parents who don’t have hours to spend on daily housekeeping.
Parents who can’t afford professional help need to follow a strict cleaning schedule. You may have an hour or less to prepare your house for a showing, so letting dirty dishes and clutter pile up isn’t an option. Create a checklist for daily and weekly chores, and assign age-appropriate tasks to each family member so one person isn’t responsible for all the upkeep. Include a list of everything you need to do before leaving the house for a showing, like taking out the trash and moving cars out of the driveway.
Don’t forget about helpful gadgets and upgrades, too; many parents love a robot vac, since it helps stay on top of crumbs and pet hair. Similarly, if you’re constantly fighting cooking odors, a well-chosen range hood can help improve the air quality and presentation of your home when house hunters visit. Think outside the box when looking for home staging solutions.
What to Do with Kids During Showings and Open Houses
Showings and open houses can be a major disruption to kids’ schedules, not to mention the challenge of getting children dressed and out of the house on short notice. Consider asking another neighborhood parent to babysit during showings. Some days may have several showings, and you’ll need to keep kids out of the house all day. Dropping the kids off somewhere familiar is easier than driving around looking for activities to keep everyone entertained.
If there’s no babysitter available, grab a few portable toys and snacks, and head to the library, park, movie theater, or another kid-friendly place for a few hours. Try to make it a positive experience for your kids. If they know showings mean running errands and being bored, they’re more likely to put up a fight when you’re rushing to leave home!
Finally, be sensitive to your children’s needs while selling your home. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when kids get in the way and create messes, but it’s important to remember that moving is a tough time for children too. Ensuring your kids’ needs are met during this transitional time leads to greater cooperation from everyone, and that means less stress for you!

It’s hard enough to stay focused working at home without kids underfoot. But if you have a baby on your hip or toddlers running around your house, getting work done from home can seem completely impossible. How do other parents manage? No, remote-working parents don’t have superpowers, although it may seem that way sometimes. Through a process of trial and error, you too can learn how to work productively with young kids at home. Here are some tips to help you thrive as a work-from-home parent!
Find Fulfilling Work
It’s impossible to be productive when you hate your job. If you’re feeling unmotivated or unfulfilled in your career, it might be time for a career change. Look into new roles that would better suit your skills and interests.
If you’ve always wanted to be a teacher, consider going back to school and earning an online teaching degree. Online degrees are great for parents because they enable you to work at your own pace. Keep in mind that you will also need to get a teaching license in your state in addition to earning your teaching degree. While each state has different requirements for teaching certificates, you will typically need to complete a background check, pass entrance exams, and submit your transcripts.
Leverage Time-Saving Tools
Whether you’re a business owner or employee, you can make your remote work easier by leveraging time-saving tech tools. Freelancers, for example, can use online accounting apps to automate bookkeeping and client billing. You can even find invoice templates to help you create professional invoices featuring your business name, logo, brand colors, and any other important information you need to include. Just choose a premade invoice template and customize it with your business branding for a polished and professional look!
Design Your Office for Productivity
A dedicated home workspace is essential if you’re working from home full-time. As you set up your new office, try to implement a few features that will aid your productivity. Invest in a comfortable chair and a desk that’s big enough for the type of work you do. Set up a file system and install shelving to keep clutter stored away and off your desk. If your desk is always littered with notes, get a bulletin board where you can tack them up. Balance The Grind also suggests bringing some of the outdoors inside with potted plants and landscape paintings.
Schedule Your Time Carefully
When you have kids at home, you’ll need to schedule your workday strategically. See if you can organize your work around your children’s schedules. For example, if your toddler always naps around the same time every afternoon, schedule your most mentally demanding work during this time. What to Expect explains that most toddlers nap for 2 to 3 hours during the day! Leave other tasks, like answering emails, for those times when you need to multitask work and childcare.
Keep Your Kids Occupied
While you should be able to get a good chunk of work done while your little one naps, you’re likely wondering what to do about the rest of the day when they’re awake. The trick is to have a variety of entertaining options available to pull out when you need a distraction. Coloring books, sticker books, sensory bins, busy books, and even an empty cardboard box can keep young kids busy for a long time. Set up these activities in your office so you can monitor your kids while you work. You can even use a baby playpen to ensure your little one stays out of trouble when you have to take your eyes off them.
Working from home with young kids is far from impossible. As you overcome daily challenges and figure out what works best for you, staying productive will become easier and easier. Most importantly, remember to cherish these days at home with your kids. They’ll be heading off to school before you know it!

]]>The crazy school year has come to its close and the kiddos are geared up for a much-needed summer break! Whether you’ve been using an area of your house as a makeshift schoolroom or just accumulated the normal end-of-the-year pileup, this is a great moment to streamline and declutter before summer fun commences and more stuff comes marching into your home.
• • • •
We’ve sat down with Lauren Weldon May, Certified Professional Organizer, for the essential tips on owning your space this season. And with new products to help you streamline the kids’ rooms, White Loft has you covered in at least one corner of the house as well!
Problem: We love going to the pool and beach, but the stuff can be overwhelming, damp, and messy. How should I store and handle these items between uses?
Lauren Says: Whenever possible, don’t actually let it all the way into the house! When you can, carve out a space where you enter the house to allow pool towels to dry. If that’s in your garage or mud room, that’s great! If you live near a beach, dedicate a solid-sided laundry basket at that entry point to carry these items to the laundry room so you’re not getting sand everywhere.
• • • •
Problem: Summertime revolves around the kitchen and the snack chaos is endless! What is the best way to keep my kitchen functional while my kids have fun?
Lauren Says: I say, give each kid their OWN snack bin during the summer when they are around more. I label the bins with each kids’ name so they have ownership over their stuff. Then no one has to ask where their snacks are or what they’re allowed to have.
• • • •
Problem: Some of my children’s fall and winter stuff still fits… Where and how should I store it during summer when they’ll be living in shorts and tees?
Lauren Says: This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t love separating seasonal clothing out completely. I often find that this practice encourages people to fill up their closets multiple times over. We tend to fill space no matter how abundant it is; [keeping it out year-round is] a good exercise to edit so the entirety of your wardrobe fits in the space you have. Obviously I make an exception for special seasonal clothing like ski gear, but you get my point!

We Say: This is where we have to chime in with the newest product in our fleet of handmade wood baby and family heirloom gifts! White Loft is now offering closet organizers for toddlers and babies that can keep you on track with seasonal planning and sizing up.

What is a Learning Disability?
Learning disabilities are areas of inefficiency in brain function that affect its ability to receive, process, analyze, or store certain information, making it difficult for a student to learn. There are various types of learning disabilities including dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and sensory processing deficits. Signs a child may have a learning disability include a limited attention span, poor memory, trouble following directions, poor coordination, disorganization, and troubles when it comes to the basics of reading, writing, or math.
Teachers may notice students with learning disorders:
How an Arts Education Helps Children with Learning Disabilities
While children with learning disabilities may struggle with certain subjects more than other children with the right educational and emotional support, they are just as likely to grow up to be successful and happy. One way parents and teachers can encourage kids with learning disabilities is by incorporating the arts into their schooling in some way. The arts empower children and give them a way to express themselves when they struggle to do so in other areas of their education.
Getting involved in the arts can help instill focus in children that suffer from learning disabilities like ADHD that makes it difficult to pay attention. Succeeding in the arts also builds up their self-esteem, which can benefit them in other aspects of their education. When they see themselves as successful learners in one area, it’s easier for children to see themselves as successful in others.
Additionally, you could also teach other kids around the neighborhood and help them discover their love of the arts. And if you want to take teaching to the next level, you could turn it into a business! Of course, when starting a business, you’ll need to make sure you have a business plan to help guide you and a thorough understanding of how to start a business.
What are ‘the arts?’
Asking “What is art?” opens up the floor for an endless philosophical debate. For the sake of brevity, when we talk about the arts, we use it as a term to encompass all the means of expression that utilize a combination of skill and imagination to create an experience that can be shared with other people. These experiences come in the forms of dance, drawings, literature, film, music, paintings, photography, sculpture and theater.
Learning disabilities make it difficult for bright kids to succeed in certain areas of their education. With the right support, children with learning disabilities can grow up to be as happy and successful as children without them. One way to support your child with a learning disability is by implementing the arts into their education. From music lessons to dance, the arts can help children with various problems stemming from their disorders.

When your kids are full of energy and the weather cooperates, going outdoors is the best way to burn it off. But when snow, rain, cold, or COVID-19 is keeping them indoors, you’ll have to come up with indoor activities that are just as effective. When planning indoor activities to help your kids make it through the winter months, consider some of these active and interactive ideas to help your whole family stave off boredom.

Get moving during transitions.
If your kids are used to closing their school laptops and running outside, the early sunsets and freezing temperatures might lead to sluggish afternoons. As an alternative, they can simply dash to the TV to do one of these high-energy exercise videos. Being active is a great way to end a workday and transition to home life, so parents should join them too.
The entire family can follow along with qualified yoga teachers who share free videos on YouTube, or your kids can learn to dance in your living room through an online class. You can even get your kids excited by making a dance-party playlist together.
Create an art gallery.
Your mini-Matisses will love the winter lull if you use that time to help them explore art. Look at different artists and genres online together and help your kids choose something to emulate. Keep them engaged with art through practice.
You can then set up an art gallery in your living room, hallway, or spare bedroom, and host opening night receptions for their new works of art. Ask them questions about art, both in general and about their own pieces. Talking about visual art is an easy and effective path to enhancing critical thinking.
Take advantage of gaming.
Studies at Stanford show that VR (virtual reality) technology has the ability to help kids develop empathy and reduce implicit racial bias. While it is important to closely monitor the time your kids spend gaming, VR games are some of the best ways to get kids active while playing. There are many fun and educational games available for kids of all ages, including Roblox, Starfall, and BrainPOP.
For parents working from home, keep in mind that some games do strain your internet speed, so be sure your home connection is able to handle everyone’s wants and needs. Also make sure that your tablet is up to the task. If your tablet is a few years old and having problems downloading and running games, check in with your wireless provider to see if they offer trade-in deals for new models.
Host story night.
Humans have told stories around campfires for countless centuries. Ask your kids to write — stories, poetry, memoirs, book or movie reviews, and anything else they are inspired to create. You can then host a reading in your dining room, complete with cups of hot cocoa, or sit in front of the fireplace swapping tales.
While the world may slow down a bit during the winter, your family can take advantage of the downtime to build deeper bonds with each other. The most important thing to remember is to plan activities that are interesting, exciting, and educational.

Grab ‘n Go: Preparing the Hospital Bags
The typical human gestation period of approximately 37 to 42 weeks may seem like ample time for parental preparation. However, first-time parents are typically starting their journey with little more than dreams and intentions. Suddenly, they may realize their current home is too cramped, leading to remodeling or relocation. At a minimum, baby quarters need to be planned and established. The last several weeks of pregnancy also often sap mom’s energy and drive to get things done compared to the more exuberant and anticipatory early months.
In the throes of all of this planning there lies another critical but much more mundane aspect: What to take to the hospital when the big moment arrives.
A new way to approach packing
How parents and the obstetrics community approach labor and childbirth now is the result of decades of change – for the better. Parental partners are now an integral part of the entire experience, from antepartum visits, to labor coaching and delivery. While mother and baby continue to be a key focus, the partner – who is often the labor coach – tracks the labor and delivery plan, while being mom’s voice and advocate if she changes her mind at any point.
Given these responsibilities, it makes sense for the partner to pack a separate bag, not just for easy access during labor, but to keep belongings orderly in a time that is typically anything but.
Partner and labor coach essentials
Babies come when they are ready! This can mean labor of 20 hours or more, or in some cases, less than an hour. Moms and partners should rest whenever possible, particularly in the early, less uncomfortable stages of labor. Pack a favorite pillow, reading material, and music. Be ready for anything with a change of clothing and personal toiletries, as well as comfortable walking shoes for breaks.
While the thought or scent of food may make mom nauseous, the labor coach should pack some nourishing snacks, perhaps high-protein and high-fiber bars, but selected with mom’s penchant to find most anything malodorous in mind.
It is also a good idea to pack your go-to headache medicine, any other prescription medicines, and contacts or eyeglasses. Keep any items necessary to implement your labor and delivery plan (and don’t forget the written plan!), such as family and pediatrician contact names, and birth or peanut balls. This frees up mom’s bag for her and baby.
Packing for mom and baby
Pregnancy and childbirth are incredible processes, and while few, if any, would label them as glamorous, pack items that while practical and comfortable, are still imbued with style to give your morale a boost as you become acquainted with your postpartum body.
Common items to pack include your own favorite toiletries (including simple makeup items), pajamas, robe and loungewear, and roomy undergarments. If you’re nursing, you’ll want to include one or two nursing bras. No longer are your choices confined to solely utilitarian styles; today there are several types of bras from which to choose.
Many moms elect to wear leggings during pregnancy, but they are also a fantastic choice for both your hospital stay when you get tired of your pajamas, as well as for your trip home. There are types suited to any weather, they’re comfortable, and their versatility makes it easy to dress them up in ways that are flattering during your postpartum transition – for example, easily dress them up head to toe with a tunic or sweater, and add stylish yet practical boots.
For baby, keep the going-home outfit simple, particularly if your weather requires you to bundle the baby up for the journey home. The hospital will provide you with plenty of baby wipes and diapers, as well as miscellaneous samples and gifts, so consider packing an empty bag just for this baby booty
If you plan to take any photos upon arrival, you can welcome baby with a custom name disc or "hello world" photo prop!
Timing eases the transition
Have your bags packed and ready to grab by at least the 37th week of pregnancy. This easy preparation work can remove an amazing amount of chaos during a time when the object of your attention makes their debut.
]]>In March, your kids left school for spring break sure to return 10 days later. 6 months have passed, and school still hasn’t fully opened. You are suddenly a homeschool family, and you’re trying desperately to figure out how to navigate your child’s education and free time while yourself trying to work from home.
]]>
Does this sound familiar? It’s a common story throughout the world. Here are a few ways to ensure that your story is streamlined without destroying your budget.
Make sure you have the right technology.
Technology is the cornerstone of the virtual schooling experience. This is one area that you will want to invest, even if it puts a dent in your budget. Fortunately, you can use Staples coupons and discounts from this and other big-box stores to save money on things like laptops, tablets, and wireless headphones.
With the right devices, your child will be able to seamlessly log in to their Google Classroom (or online platform of their school district’s choice). They’ll also have access to online activities that can keep them busy while you work. There are plenty of educational games available; Skillcrush lists 15 free coding games that will help kids of all ages understand the basic premise behind different programming languages.
Integrate learning activities into their day.
Children’s minds work differently than ours. They are constantly trying to make sense of the world around them. Try designing your home and day around learning activities that don’t feel like classwork. You might, for example, use your White Loft growth chart as a way to open up a discussion about biology. Kids between the ages of six and 12, the demographic that’s likely to need your help the most as you virtual school, grow quickly, and they might wonder why.
Plan to take plenty of breaks together, which will both increase your productivity and give their brain a moment to pause so that they can reset their thoughts when they get back to their math work. You can do things like prepare and eat lunch, go for a walk, or spend a few hours in the afternoon hunting for animal tracks, which are all free activities that open up an academic conversation that can help keep them on track.
Set up a quiet workspace for you and the kids.
There’s one universal truth to working at home while teaching children, and that is that you all need your space. Wired magazine explains that comfort is essential, and eliminating distractions is crucial. Before you try to dive headfirst into school and work, make sure everyone has a space to call their own. This does not have to be a full office set up, and something as inexpensive as a lap desk and a floor pillow may be all you need.
Keep distractions to a minimum, and make sure to offer your children plenty of options for activities they can do if they get stuck without having to interrupt your workday. Examples might be reading, watching a Netflix documentary, or drawing a picture.
Important things to remember
As a parent, you want the best for your children. And, right now, virtual education is the wisest (and possibly only) option. But it is not without its potential downsides. However, with a bit of preparation and a positive mindset, you can get through it with your – and your children’s – sanity intact.

Taking time away from work, school, and daily life is a healthy move for every member of your family. However, traveling with kids isn’t always easy – and what worked at one age may not do the trick at others. Here’s a look at some age-by-age tips for keeping your kids happy on family vacations:
Teens
The great thing about traveling with teens is that you can give them a lot more freedom than with younger children. You have the option to spend as much time together as a family as you want, but you can also make the call to split up and do your own thing for a little while, if you’d like.
However, teens are also less likely to be easily entertained by car games or audiobooks than their younger counterparts. Consider bringing along a teen-friendly laptop if you’ll be taking a long drive or flight to your destination. Look for something substantial enough to stand up to traveling with kids, lightweight for use, and with enough memory that they can entertain themselves with games or movies. That way it can be put to use long after vacation ends, both at school and at home.
Preteens
As Verywell Health explains, preteens or “tweens” are in a special, transformative time in life. They’re splitting the difference between the dependence of childhood and the freedom of becoming a young adult. As a result, it’s important to find ways to give them safe, secure ways to build confidence and independence.
For example, consider taking your pre-teens to an adventure park or other area where they can explore on their own in a relatively controlled environment. Make sure they know where to find you, and let them have some time on the vacation to find their own fun. This way you can know they’ll be safe while giving them a chance to practice independence.
Preschoolers and School-Aged
The best thing you can do with kids in this stage on vacation is give them chances to learn – but disguise it with fun. Search for destinations that have activities like children’s museums, which are designed to tap into kids’ sense of wonder and curiosity. Aquariums and zoos are another great way to have fun outings with kids that engage their interest in learning more about the world.
As you make your way through, have them read the plaques and tell you the most interesting thing they learn about specific exhibits or animals. This allows them to cement the knowledge they pick up, and you might learn something neat, too!
Toddler
Toddlers are all about observation and exploration. A great way to engage their sense of play on a vacation is to take them on a nature walk or other outdoor experience. Look for a park that has a nice, easy hiking path and let them set your pace. Give them the freedom to stop to stare at bugs, interesting rocks, and cool plants you find along the way. By tapping into that natural interest in the world, Scholastic notes you can keep them entertained and help them absorb information.
Baby
Traveling with a baby can be a big challenge, but the right planning will make it a thousand times easier. If you’re traveling by car, take a break at least every two hours to give your baby some time to stretch their legs and move around. If you can, bring along a portable crib or pack n play, ideally one they’re already familiar with. This will help make nap and bedtimes easier, as they won’t have to adjust to a new sleep space in addition to the new environment.
Keep as much of your routine consistent as possible. Build in plenty of time for naps and baby play to avoid fussiness or overtiredness. Consider using a baby-carrying device and, if your child is old enough, set them up so they’re forward facing while you walk around different markets and museums. This gives them a chance to soak up the sights and sounds of your destination, and participate on their level.
Vacationing with the family is a great way to bond and unwind together, but kids do need special consideration on trips. Planning ahead and meeting your child at their stage is a great way to make sure they have as much fun on vacation as you do!

This is honestly where those epic feelings of self doubt come in as a mom. How can we make the most of our free time and create those memories with each child that will carry with them throughout the years? How can we make those days special enough that we don't feel so guilty when our heads are buried in the sand, or the paperwork, or the laundry piles?
Here are some of my favorite ideas that we've either tried... or plan to this spring and summer!
Candy for breakfast? This mama says, YES!!
Plan a "Yes" Day
If you're a Type A mama, you're probably cringing at the idea of a day where you don't say "no" to your little one at all. But I promise, it's not as scary as it sounds. With a few ground rules in place (No expenditure over $X set budget per activity; nothing where anyone can get hurt or any permanent damage will come to an object, etc...) From there, let the fun unfold on their terms.
A friend recently tried a "yes" day with her daughter and was absolutely floored at the sweet ways her little girl wanted to utilize their special "Mommy can't say no" time. From snuggling in bed and watching the same movie twice, to baking cookies together, and finally a family game of tag at dusk... she reported that the day was perfect in every way.

Bring Your Littles to Work
Don't plan it on a day when colleagues are doing the same, or during a particularly stressful time of the year. But when you have a little flexibility in your schedule and can really show your child the in's and out's while answering all their questions, it will be a truly special day.
Treat your child like an "assistant" or intern for the day: bring them to a typical lunch with your colleagues; let them reorganize or decorate your desk; give them little jobs. Even children as young as three can arrange pens in a cup. Let them leave their mark on your dry erase board and make sure to snap a selfie y'all can pin up together on a bulletin board or elsewhere by the desk.
They will love knowing their day at the office was like a "real" work day -- and think how cool it will be to go into school the next day and tell their friends all about it.

Littleness is not a liability -- dine al fresco if it makes it easier on you both!
Go Out to a Fancy Restaurant (& Dress the Part!)
Kid-friendly restaurants are great. If there's a children's menu and a wipe-clean booth in sight, I'm all about it with little kids. But from even a young age (depending on your child, and your preference of course!) it can be seriously amazing to treat them to a grown-up lunch or dinner date on the town.
Once they're ready to try it out (and you are!), call ahead to a nice restaurant nearby and make sure the chef won't be offended if your young diner orders a simplified version of something on the menu (my kids have eaten pasta with butter at some truly special places!). Pick out nice outfits, order Shirley Temples, and just know that this time alone with you is about the best thing that's happened in their young life recently.
BONUS: It also creates a point of reference for your next date night with your spouse or significant other, because the kids will get why Mommy needs to do restaurant nights with the important people in life, since they've been there!

Even if the biggest thing you make in the kitchen is a mess, it's worth the moment...
Make Something Together
The best mommy & me dates are often the least expensive! Don't worry about a big budget for purchasing new toys or dining somewhere special. A visit to your local hobby shop or even thrift store can be the perfect start to an amazing mom and me day.
My kids and I love creating together -- whether that's painting and wallpapering a dollhouse off Facebook Marketplace; making collages or dream boxes out of magazine clippings and a shoe box; or just throwing some banana nut muffins in the oven.
Put the screens out of sight, roll up your sleeves, and get to work -- with your hands -- together. These are the types of memories that your children will hold onto forever.

Take a Staycation (or Just a Little Road Trip)
A mini road trip to the next city over can open up doors you never even imagined existed. Do some research, talk to other moms, and cultivate of list of absolutely amazing activities you can do right in your own town or just down the street. Things you've never done before and maybe even something outside your comfort zone.
Is there an animal sanctuary nearby? Go give a rescued pig a hug! Is there a house museum in a nearby city? Learn about the people who used to live there! You might be surprised at how many fun (and even free) ways there are to get out and explore right in your own backyard.
Up the ante with a one-night stay at a local hotel room if it's in your budget and plans for the month. What a magical way to celebrate life with the most important people in it!

We absolutely love supporting small businesses in general, and baby gifts are no exception. Read on for our spring lineup featuring sweet handmade and carefully curated pieces for baby shower shopping or to celebrate any new parents.
Baby's First Swimsuit
It might not be the most practical baby gift, but it sure is cute! A monogram or wood name sign is such a special way to celebrate a new baby! Poke around Mama's baby registry to figure out the colors and textures she's incorporating into the room and then surprise the family with a handmade sign featuring the baby's name. This doubles as exquisite baby shower decor too; so there's no need to wrap!

Holiday photo shoots can be time-consuming, expensive, and stressful. That's not to say you'll regret it if you spring for one: there's really nothing as special as capturing these moments as they pass, especially if you do it consistently at the same time of year.
But if this is not your year for professional photos, or you missed your favorite photographer's deadline and are now stuck shooting them yourself, fear not. You don't actually need a super fancy camera and a ton of experience to DIY your family photos this Christmas.
]]>Seriously, how cute is this Christmasy decor photo from Michele Kelly, @micheletravkelly on IG?! Can you spot the Rustic Walnut growth chart next to the tree? Make sure to always take pictures of your holiday decor... you'll want to look back on that later, too!

For the New Mom...
Photo: Twinty Photography
The pregnant mama or mom of a newborn could really use sleep, but since you can't offer her that this Christmas, do something sweet and simple that celebrates this time in her life.
New moms love things like:
For the Overwhelmed Mama...
She needs to slow down, so focus on things that can facilitate that process for her. Moms of toddlers, elementary kids, and teens get so caught up in carpools and soccer practice, potlucks and homework help, deadlines and date nights, it's often that they don't have time to relax and take care of themselves.
Try these self-care gifts for busy moms:

So she loves to treat herself. That's wonderful! But won't it be an amazing surprise when you turn up at her doorstep this holiday season with a totally unique and special gift to let her know how much she means to you and everyone else around her?
Consider these uniquely cool gifts for the decked out mama:
Don't forget to pick up some goodies for yourself this season, too!

]]>From how to survive a day at the beach with a baby to which snacks and activities are best to pack for a road trip with toddlers, to organizing tips and cleaning hacks, today's mom bloggers have some of the best ideas. Here are some of my favorites:
1. Use a mesh bag for washing kids' socks. What the what? How many times have you bid adieu far too soon to your kiddo's socks, because they mysteriously go missing in the washing machine or dryer? A cheap laundry bag can solve that problem, STAT. Mind. Blown. (Check out Life with My Littles for more mom hacks!)
2. Take a fitted sheet to the beach with Baby. Our first few beach days with my baby girl were a mess of sand, sunscreen, and tears. Once I learned about this cool trick, I never looked back! (This image has been circling the Web for a while now and I wish I knew who the smart mama behind it was, because I would thank her myself!)
3. Set up a "While Mommy Works Box." I'm all about this tip from Allison Lindstrom's blog, filled with activities and games to help get you through those days when the kids are all up in your business and you need to, well, get to business! Tell me in the comments what you'd put in your while mommy works box.
4. Make "fairy toast." Got picky eaters? Get food coloring and sprinkles. Blogger Jenny Gerson of Our Life in Rose Gold went through a period when her picky little four-year-old was refusing to eat much of anything, so she starting serving whole grain toast and vegan cream cheese with a bit of food coloring and letting her little sprinkle it with "fairy dust" for a super-special (and secretly nutritious) treat.
5. Plastic cupcake liners can do more than you think! Slip them up the bottom of a popsicle to keep the mess from dripping down onto little ones' hands as they slurp. Place them inside your cupholders in the car to collect change and keep dust and grime at bay. What else have you figured out to put these suckers to work? Tell us in the comments!

6. Keep school papers to sign by lunchbox filler. How many times have you gotten that nagging suspicion that you neglected to sign a field trip permission slip? This easy solution is pure genius!
Image via: Babble
7. Fashion a switch guard to prevent waste. Switch-happy kids can be a real pain in the electric bill. This quick and easy light switch cover DIY from The Child at Heart blog is a great solution.
8. Sneak veggies into their dessert. Yeah, you read that right. Picky eaters can be tough, but this summer serve up vegetable-infused ice pops for a tasty win-win they'll never suspect are a healthy treat!

9. Put your dishwasher to work. Did you know that yours can wash shoes, toys, and a ton of other surprising home-and-family related stuff in the dishwasher? Check out a complete list here and thank us later.
10. Get crafty with confidence. Nothing is more fun that arts and crafts with the littles, but this awesome YouTube tutorial video features a ton of organization and other tips to help craft time run smoothly.
Every girl boss knows that your work space is almost as important as the actual work you're doing. Yes, lots of great hustle takes place on dining room tables and lap desks, in the wee hours of the night while rocking babies back to sleep while typing into cell phone memo apps, and on long road trips via voicemail.
But as you build your brand or chase your dream, keep in mind the goal of creating an oasis where you can put your thinking cap on, dig in deep, and go long. Your dream office or home workspace might not happen overnight or even this year or next, but get Pinning and make it a point to pull small pieces of your inspiration into whatever corner you find yourself working in now.

Your dream office or home workspace might not happen overnight or even this year or next, but get Pinning and make it a point to pull small pieces of your inspiration into whatever corner you find yourself working in now.
Because beautiful home offices are where the dreams of the future come true, today. Here are some of my favorite ideas, and a peek into my own space as featured a while back on our blog:
Cool Corner
You don't need a whole room, or even half of one, to make the perfect escape right in your own space. I am loving this corner girl boss office encased by the desk itself and decorated with mementos and inspiration in a soothing palette.
Photo: The Beauty Dojo
Modern Industrial
Sleek lines and a minimalist design approach keeps the head (and the desk) from getting too cluttered. This monochrome space gets pops of warmth from potted plants and rose gold accents. And her organization game is amazing.

Girly girl? Go with it! This lush, beautiful space is on the opposite end of the mom boss office spectrum from my own more rustic, minimalist take, but it's such a pretty example of what can happen when you decide how to approach your own profession -- and embrace your own taste!

Clean & Cozy
Exposed brick evokes an urban feel that is undeniably chic; you can recreate a similar look with contact paper if your walls aren't already like this. A simple desk and white furnishings sets up peace of mind and neutrality for your best work yet, while the lush chair and personal photos feel inviting.

]]>But when you aren't packing for five or six days at the beach or in a foreign country, you have to be strategic about what you bring. I love nothing more than being able to pack a whole weekend's worth of clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and summer must-haves into one easy bag and heading out the door.
My Favorite Bag:
My weekender of choice is from another small mama owned shop, Gentry California. It's functional, roomy, and easy to carry -- all of which are important for moms on the go.
What to Pack:
- A great tinted moisturizer with SPF is an absolute must. It's light, breathable, and protective of your skin without caking like makeup does. I like BareMinerals. ($32, Nordstrom).
- A breezy dress you can take from day to night lets you enjoy more and stress less. Check ASOS, Loft, and Gap for good options at a great price.
- A flat, comfy pair of shoes that keeps feet happy while also looking somewhat chic. I swear by my Birkenstocks. Luckily, there are a ton of pretty colors and patterns you can find now on top of the basics, like these rose golds! ($135, Madewell).
- A cute ball cap that keeps the sun off your face and hair in check. My personal favorite is this one, by Magnolia. ($26).
- A healing facial mist like my go-to, Organic Rose Water Facial Mist by Slow North. ($18).
- A pair of comfy PJ's to unwind in at the end of the day. These from J. Crew are ridiculously great for summer nights. ($79.50)
How to Pack It -- Simple packing tips I swear by:
1. Roll, don't fold items that wrinkle easily. You can get silk dresses, linen tops, and so on into your weekend bag and skip garment bags altogether. Simply fold a t-shirt small, then roll it up. Starting at the bottom of the fragile garment, very slowly roll it around the roll t-shirt (like you're making a huge piece of sushi!) until you reach the top. Place gently in your suitcase and continue.
2. Pack by outfit, not by clothing type. In real life, coordinating outfits ahead is best left to the kindergarten set. But when heading out of two for a few days, planning ahead is actually smart. I will pair shorts or a skirt and the t-shirt I plan to wear with them side-by-side or on top of each other in my bag instead of organizing all the items with their like-and-kind. This helps you avoid over-packing and makes getting dressed on vacation easy.
3. Wear whatever jewelry you're bringing. It sounds obvious, but don't place jewelry in the suitcase, even if it's costume. Enamel and plastics tend to snap easily which they can under pressure. And precious metals or stones have no place in a carry-on. Commit to your jewelry of the weekend and wear it while traveling to and from. You can always lock up whatever you're not wearing on a given day in the hotel safe.
